The Alotenango project in Guatemala was inspired by the desire to promote the simultaneous implementation of several development activities, technical and social, in just one village. A greater visibility of development projects was thus anticipated rendering Alotenango a development model that could be followed by other communities.
The Alotenango project was initiated in 2005 by the cooperation between a public and a private organization: the Municipality of Alotenango – Sacatepèquez and the Jepa-Limmat Foundation. Since 2006 other public and private organizations have joined the Alotenango Group.
Activities planned, initiated or completed (with the support of the Municipality, the Jepa-Limmat Foundation and other private or public Agencies) include:
- The restoration of a few monuments (pilas)
- The establishment of an Office of Social Affairs - Document 3
- Pre-feasibility studies for Garbage Treatment, Water Distribution and I.T. Laboratory - Document 4
- A Laboratory for Renewable Energy that produced several energy-efficient devices such as solar water heaters, wood burning stoves, biogas plants - Document 5
- Low- cost, decorous housing - Document 6
