OFFICE OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS (OAS) in Alotenango - Guatemala

The Office of Social affairs (Oficina de Asuntos Sociales) was established in 2006 and it is still hosted in the old municipal building in Alotenango.

THE MISSION OF OAS

The Office of Social Affairs recognizes the complexity of its mission which involves fundamental activities for the social, economical, educational development of the families and the community. Several problems have been tackled during the preceding Administration within the limits of the scarce resources. The gap between the needs and the resources is indeed overwhelming.

All the projects which have been tackled include classes and group meetings on topics of immediate relevance to the community, often involving a cooperation with the local Development Committee (CoCoDe). Economical support is received from the Jepa Foundation and local organizations.

CONTINUING OAS ACTIVITIES COVER:

  1. Assistance to Medical Projects: Jornadas medicas, referral to hospitals, reproductive health.
  2. Assistance to Educational Projects: Continuing education for school teachers and other adults, vocational training, information technology, municipal library, distant education, participation to social and community issues.
  3. Employment: Data base for unemployed bricklayers, carpenters, farmers…. are interfaced with needs of local enterprises.
  4. Woman development: Self-awareness, skill development, microcredit. Short, low-cost courses on subjects such as typical cooking, typical textiles, children education, sanitation.
  5. Environment: Garbage separation and collection, diffusion of renewable energy: particularly biogas plants, efficient Onil stoves, solar water heaters. Control of air and water pollution due to buses and abusive waste disposal. Control of acoustic emissions.
