Training and Educational Courses

Vocational

The town of San Antonio Aguas Calientes is regarded as the main center for the development of the well-known textiles typical of Guatemala. Artisan ladies from San Antonio have gladly accepted the invitation to start a course of tejido tipico in neighboring Alotenango. The first course was held during the month of June 2008. Daily classes were attended by groups of ladies working on individual looms and producing their first cloth in about a week. Some of the ladies provided guidance for the ladies attending courses in the following years. The modest cost of the project was supported by the Foundation: the ladies provided only the material for the production of the clothes

Nursing

Support for ladies willing to take a diploma of assistant nurse was initiated in June 2008. Courses, offered at the Liceo Antigueno and participating hospitals in Antigua, included weekly theoretical classes and daily practice. A diploma was granted at the end of a one year course. The full cost of the course was borne by the Foundation for the first student enrolled.

Plataforma: Alotenango

The Plataforma project began in 2017 with the inauguration of a small school aiming to reinforce the education offered by public schools to students at the primary level. Their progress was monitored by cooperation with teachers of the public schools. About 20 young students were assisted by voluntary university students after regular school hours.

Continuing Education for Elementary School Teachers and Adults.

Courses in Geology, Sustainable Development, Environment, and Mathematics were initiated in 2008 at the Municipality of San Antonio. Professors from the Faculty of Engineering of the San Carlos University organized a series of lectures delivered weakly over one year. The courses were attended by primary school teachers from San Antonio and neighboring towns. The Foundation provided the necessary textbooks selected by the Professors.

Continuing Education for Adults and High School Students.

Tuition expenses for up to 20 students and adults to allow them to continue basic courses beyond the elementary level have been offered by the Foundation at the Educational Center Fray Luis de la Cruz in Antigua since 2010. Courses at the advanced high school level are now offered.
